Miscreants hurled bombs at deputy pradhan Bhadu Sheikh on Monday evening
A cycle of violence started with the murder of local Trinamool Congress panchayat leader Bhadu Sheikh. His death led to carnage which left the entire nation in shock.
The arson attack was in response to the murder of Bhadu Sheikh. It is learned that family members of Fatik Sheikh and Chhota Lalon Sheikh have been burnt to death. Fatik and Chhota Lalon are accused of killing Bhadu Sheikh, deputy chief of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-controlled Barshal village panchayat.
Unidentified people had on 21 March set ablaze 10 houses in the village, killing at least eight people, including women and children. The CBI team of around 20 members went inside the house where the charred bodies of seven people were recovered.
Police officers suspended
The SDPO of Rampurhat and the officer in charge of the local police station have been removed after the incident. The situation in the village was under control, Director General of Police (DGP) Manoj Malaviya said.
Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government constituted a special investigation team headed by CID additional director-general of police Gyanwany Singh. As many as 11 people were arrested hours after the incident.
If it is confirmed the fire was set deliberately, it would be the first mass political killing since Mamata Banerjee took over as chief minister in 2011. In 2007, there were incidents of mass killings in Nandigram. The BJP alleged the incident was akin to the mass killing of the era of CPI(M) rule. The BJP demanded the imposition of President's Rule in West Bengal.
The Calcutta High Court later directed the CBI to take over the case and set a deadline of April 7 to submit its progress report. On the deadline day, the probe agency apprehended four people in connection with the case.
"Of the four arrested accused, two persons -- identified as Bappa and Shabu Sheikh -- were named in the FIR lodged in connection with the killings
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted, “Horrifying violence and arson orgy #Rampurhat #Birbhum indicates the state is in grip of violence culture and lawlessness. Already eight lives lost”. He noted that he had sought an urgent update from the Chief Secretary on the matter.
“It is not political rivalry. It could be deep-rooted personal enmity between two groups,” the DGP said. Miscreants hurled bombs at deputy pradhan Bhadu Sheikh on Monday evening and he sustained grievous injuries. According to villagers, after his death, miscreants set several huts on fire. Senior police officers said the retaliation was immediate. Seven bodies were recovered from the house of Sanju Sheikh.
